What should you know about prostate cancer that has spread to the bones?

Cancer cells can travel from the prostate to bone and form deposits that weaken or irritate the affected area. This may cause persistent bone pain, reduced movement, or a fracture. The spine, pelvis, hips, and ribs are commonly assessed because problems there can affect mobility or nerves.

Care is planned around the cancer's extent, previous treatment, general health, pain, and whether the spine or other weight-bearing bones are involved. Scans and blood tests help the team follow changes, but a single result does not describe the whole picture.

Arrange a review with your oncology team to discuss the scan findings, goals of treatment, and protection of bone strength. Treatment may include medicines that act throughout the body, radiotherapy for a painful or risky area, and medicines that reduce skeletal complications. A second opinion can help when the diagnosis or treatment plan feels unclear.

Tell the team about pain, weakness, falls, numbness, constipation, or changes in bladder or bowel control. Gentle movement may be useful, but ask about lifting, exercise, and fall prevention before stressing a painful bone. Palliative care can be added at any stage to support pain, sleep, appetite, mood, and family concerns.

Seek urgent medical help for new severe back or neck pain, leg weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These symptoms can signal pressure on the spinal cord and need rapid assessment.

Contact the treatment team promptly for sudden severe bone pain after a minor injury, inability to put weight on a limb, fever during treatment, or pain that is no longer controlled by the agreed plan.
