Prostate cancer symptoms in males

In males, prostate cancer may have no early symptoms or may affect urine flow, sexual function and comfort. Possible signs include difficulty starting or stopping urine, a weak stream, frequent urination, blood in urine or semen, erectile difficulty, and persistent pain in the back, hips or pelvis. These symptoms can also arise from benign enlargement, infection or other conditions.

The prostate lies beneath the bladder and surrounds the urethra. Changes in or around the gland can affect the passage of urine or ejaculation. Pain in bones or the back needs attention when it persists, especially with other health changes, but it does not identify the cause. A doctor may use history, examination, blood testing, imaging and sometimes biopsy to determine what is happening. Some people have prostate cancer detected before they notice a symptom.

Make an appointment if a urinary, sexual or pain symptom persists, returns or interferes with daily life. Write down the change, its timing, visible blood, fever, pain and medicines. Bring questions about testing and ask whether a urology referral is appropriate. Difficulty passing urine should be assessed because obstruction and infection need different care.

Seek urgent care if you cannot urinate, have heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever or chills with urinary symptoms, or develop new weakness or numbness in the legs. New loss of bladder or bowel control requires immediate assessment.
