Prostate cancer stage: what it tells you

Staging considers whether cancer is confined to the prostate, has grown into nearby structures, involves lymph nodes or has reached distant sites such as bone. Doctors use examination, biopsy information, imaging and blood tests to assemble the stage; not every person needs every test.

Stage is different from grade. Stage describes location and spread, while grade describes how abnormal the cancer cells look and how actively they may behave. Both can contribute to treatment planning.

Ask your team to explain your stage in plain language and show which test supports it. Discuss whether the goal is removing or treating cancer in one area, controlling disease throughout the body, reducing symptoms, or a combination. Ask how urinary, sexual and bowel effects may influence your choice.

Ask what your stage means, whether it could change after more testing, and how grade and other results affect the plan. Ask about the expected purpose and side effects of each option, the timing of follow-up, and which symptoms require urgent contact.
