Prostate cancer spread to the lungs: symptoms to know

Lung involvement may cause a persistent cough, shortness of breath during activity or at rest, chest discomfort, wheezing, coughing blood or unusual tiredness. These symptoms are not specific to cancer and can also result from infection, asthma, heart conditions, blood clots or treatment effects. Some lung deposits are found on imaging before symptoms appear.

Doctors may review oxygen levels, examine your chest and arrange imaging or other tests. The pattern on a scan and the rest of your cancer history help distinguish prostate cancer spread from a separate lung problem.

Tell your oncology team how symptoms started, whether they are worsening, and what activities bring them on. Record fever, chest pain, cough and breathlessness. Treatment may include systemic cancer treatment, radiotherapy for a selected area, medicines for symptoms or care for another lung condition. Do not stop prescribed treatment without speaking with the team.

Call emergency services for severe or sudden breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, new confusion, severe chest pain or coughing a substantial amount of blood. Seek prompt medical advice for a new persistent cough, worsening breathlessness, fever or coughing blood, even if symptoms seem mild.

Ask whether the scan shows lung involvement or another cause, whether oxygen testing is needed, and how symptoms will be monitored. Ask which changes require emergency help and whether treatment could affect breathing or energy.
