Prostate cancer PSMA therapy

A PSMA-targeting molecule attaches to prostate cancer cells displaying this marker and carries a radioactive payload. A scan may be used to check whether the cancer shows enough PSMA for treatment to be considered. The therapy is generally used when the oncology team believes targeted radiation fits the disease and previous treatment. Possible effects include tiredness, nausea, dry mouth, changes in taste, reduced blood counts and kidney effects. The exact plan depends on scans, blood tests and other treatments.

Follow the unit's instructions about fluids, medicines, appointments and contact with other people after treatment. Tell the team about kidney problems, low blood counts, medicines, pregnancy possibilities in a household member, or difficulty managing fluids. Keep every blood-test and scan appointment. Report dry mouth, nausea, unusual bruising or reduced urine early; supportive treatment can make these problems easier to manage. Contact the oncology team urgently for fever, chills, bleeding, severe vomiting, marked weakness, confusion, or a clear reduction in urine. Ask for immediate help if you cannot keep fluids down or feel faint. Follow the radiation-safety instructions you were given, and call the treatment unit if you are unsure about a contact or hygiene precaution.
