Prostate cancer proton treatment side effects

The prostate sits close to the bladder, urethra and rectum, so treatment may temporarily irritate nearby tissues. You may notice more frequent urination, urgency, a weaker stream or burning. Bowel changes can include looser stools, urgency, gas or rectal discomfort. Tiredness may build during treatment and improve gradually afterward. Sexual changes, including reduced erections, can appear later or be influenced by other treatments and your health.

Tell the radiation team about symptoms early; medicines, diet changes or bladder advice may help. Keep a simple record of urinary and bowel changes, fluids, medicines and sleep. Ask before taking supplements or anti-inflammatory medicines. Attend follow-up visits, where your symptoms and recovery can be reviewed alongside cancer monitoring. Other options may include standard radiotherapy or brachytherapy, depending on your treatment plan.

Contact your care team promptly if urination becomes much harder, you cannot empty your bladder, or you develop worsening pain, fever, persistent vomiting, heavy rectal bleeding or severe weakness. Difficulty passing urine needs urgent attention because obstruction can damage the bladder and kidneys. Use emergency services for collapse, confusion or breathing trouble.

Ask which effects are expected with your dose and treatment area, how they will be managed, and who to call outside clinic hours. Ask how proton treatment compares with radiotherapy, whether sexual or bowel support is available, and how follow-up will assess recovery.
