What should you know about prostate cancer prognosis by age?

A younger person and an older person with similar tumour grade and extent may still need different plans because their other health conditions, medicines, fitness, priorities, and expected recovery differ. The cancer’s grade, stage, spread, and response to treatment usually provide more useful information than age by itself.

Older age does not automatically rule out active treatment, and younger age does not guarantee an easy course. Some people need monitoring, while others need surgery, radiotherapy, medicines, or combinations based on their individual assessment.

Bring a full list of medical conditions and medicines, describe your daily activities, and identify what matters most to you: cancer control, preserving urinary or sexual function, limiting appointments, or maintaining independence. Ask the team to explain likely benefits and burdens in those terms.
