What should you know about prostate cancer prognosis after surgery?

After surgery, the laboratory report describes the tumour’s grade, extent, and whether cancer cells reach the edges of the removed tissue. Your care team combines these findings with the pre-surgery assessment and follow-up prostate-specific antigen tests.

Recovery also matters. Urine control, erections, energy, and emotional wellbeing may change after the operation and can improve with time and rehabilitation. These effects describe recovery; they do not by themselves show whether cancer has returned.

Keep the pathology report, discharge instructions, medicine list, and test schedule together. Ask when the first follow-up test is due, what result pattern would prompt review, and who will explain the result.
