What should you know about prostate cancer leg pain?

Pain can be aching, burning, shooting, or associated with tingling and numbness. The location, timing, movement triggers, and accompanying symptoms help clinicians work out whether it may involve a joint, muscle, nerve, circulation, or bone. Prostate cancer that has spread to bone can cause persistent pain, but leg pain also has many causes unrelated to cancer.

Pain travelling from the back into the leg may suggest nerve irritation. Swelling, warmth, or one-sided tenderness can point to a different urgent problem. A careful examination and, when needed, scans or blood tests help identify the cause rather than relying on pain alone.

Tell your oncology team where the pain is, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and whether it affects walking or sleep. Keep a simple pain record and mention weakness, numbness, swelling, fever, or recent treatment. Use only pain medicines approved for you, especially if you have kidney problems, stomach ulcers, or take blood thinners.

Treatment depends on the cause and may involve physiotherapy, prescribed pain relief, radiotherapy, or bone-strengthening therapy. The team may also review prostate cancer treatment such as targeted radioisotope therapy when it fits the disease pattern.

Seek urgent help for sudden leg swelling, chest pain, breathlessness, new leg weakness or numbness, difficulty walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Contact your cancer team promptly for persistent or worsening bone pain, pain that wakes you, or pain after a fall.
