What should you know about prostate cancer check age?

A check may involve a health history, a blood test that measures prostate-specific antigen, and sometimes an examination. Results can be affected by benign prostate enlargement, inflammation, infection or recent procedures, so one result does not establish cancer. Family history and inherited risk can lead to an earlier discussion. A clinician can explain what a result might mean before testing takes place.

Make an appointment to review your risk rather than choosing a date from an online age table. Bring the ages and diagnoses of close relatives with prostate or other cancers, a list of medicines, and details of urinary changes. Ask whether any recent infection, ejaculation, cycling or prostate procedure could affect the timing or interpretation of a blood test. If testing suggests a concern, further assessment may include imaging or a biopsy.

Arrange prompt medical review for difficulty passing urine, blood in the urine or semen, persistent pain in the back, hips or pelvis, or unexplained weight loss. Complete inability to pass urine, severe pain, fever or feeling acutely unwell needs urgent care. These symptoms have several possible causes; they should be assessed without assuming they indicate cancer.

Ask which factors place you in a higher-risk group, what the proposed test can and cannot show, whether you need a baseline result, and what follow-up would happen after an abnormal or changing result. Ask how urinary symptoms should be evaluated separately from cancer checks.
