The plan usually has more than one aim: control prostate cancer throughout the body, reduce pain, protect bones and preserve movement. Your team considers where the cancer is, symptoms, previous treatment, blood tests, scan findings, other health conditions and your preferences. Treatment may change over time as the cancer or symptoms respond.

Radiotherapy can focus on a painful or vulnerable area. Targeted radioisotope therapy may be suitable for selected patterns of cancer in bone. Bone-strengthening therapy can help reduce skeletal complications, while pain management supports comfort and function. These approaches are discussed as part of an oncology plan, not chosen from a scan in isolation.

Ask for the purpose of each proposed treatment, how it is given, likely side effects and how response will be checked. Tell the team about dental problems, kidney disease, medicines, falls and changes in walking. Do not begin supplements or stop prescribed treatment without advice. Gentle activity may be helpful for some people, but a clinician should guide exercise when a bone is weakened.

Seek emergency help for new leg weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control, particularly with severe back pain. Contact the team urgently for a suspected fracture, uncontrolled pain, severe vomiting, confusion or inability to pass urine. Early assessment can allow treatment of pressure, injury or other complications.

Ask which treatment aim comes first, whether radiotherapy or targeted radioisotope therapy is suitable, how bone strength will be monitored, and what pain plan to use.
