Prostate cancer and seeds

Seed treatment is a form of [Brachytherapy](/treatments/radiation-oncology/brachytherapy/) that places radioactive sources in or close to the prostate. A specialist plans their position using prostate measurements and imaging so the intended area receives treatment while nearby organs are considered. Some seeds stay in place and release radiation gradually; the type of implant and its safety instructions depend on the treatment plan. Temporary urinary irritation, a weaker stream, urgency, pelvic soreness, bowel changes, tiredness, or erection difficulties may occur.

Follow the written instructions about activity, travel, sexual contact, and contact with children or pregnant people. Take prescribed medicines as directed and report worsening urinary symptoms rather than waiting for the next appointment. Attend PSA checks and tell the team about bowel or sexual changes. The suitability of seeds depends on the prostate, urinary function, cancer features, and earlier treatment.
