Prognosis When Prostate Cancer Spreads to Bone

Spread to bone is advanced prostate cancer, but it does not produce the same course in every person. Clinicians review the number and location of bone lesions, whether organs or lymph nodes are also involved, scan findings, laboratory trends, earlier treatments, and strength and mobility.

A treatment plan may combine cancer-directed medicines with radiotherapy for a painful or vulnerable area. Targeted radioisotope therapy may be suitable for selected patterns of disease, while bone-strengthening therapy can help address skeletal complications. The aim may change as symptoms, scans, and treatment response change.

Bring a current list of medicines and describe pain by location, movement, and timing. Ask when monitoring will occur and what a change in the results would mean. Use recommended mobility aids, avoid unapproved strenuous activity if a bone is fragile, and ask about calcium, vitamin support, dental checks, and fall prevention when relevant.

Contact emergency services for sudden leg weakness, new numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe back pain, or a new inability to walk. These can signal spinal cord compression or a fracture. Seek prompt advice for uncontrolled pain, fever during treatment, or difficulty passing urine.
