Prognosis of Prostate Cancer Metastasis to Bone

Bone metastasis means prostate cancer cells have moved from the prostate to one or more bones. The care team considers which bones are involved, whether the spine or weight-bearing bones are affected, changes in prostate-specific tests and scans, previous treatment, and how you are functioning day to day.

Care may control cancer, relieve pain, protect bone strength, and reduce the chance of a fracture or spinal cord pressure. Plans can include systemic treatment, radiotherapy, targeted radioisotope therapy, or bone-strengthening therapy. Surgery is considered in selected situations, such as an unstable bone or pressure on nerves.

Keep a record of pain, walking difficulty, numbness, weakness, and changes in bladder or bowel control. Ask which scans and blood tests will track treatment. Follow the activity and lifting advice given for affected bones, and report new pain rather than waiting for the next appointment. Discuss pain relief, physiotherapy, nutrition, and fall prevention as part of the plan.

Get urgent help for new leg weakness, numbness around the buttocks or inner thighs, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe back pain, or sudden inability to stand or walk. These may indicate pressure on the spinal cord or a fracture. Difficulty passing urine also needs prompt clinical advice, especially with worsening back symptoms.
