What should you know about a professional sports massage therapist?

Short answer
A professional sports massage therapist assesses your activity, symptoms and movement before using targeted hands-on techniques to support comfort and mobility.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What sports massage involves
Treatment may use broad pressure, focused work, stretching and movement checks on muscles and the surrounding soft tissues. The therapist should ask about training load, recent impact, previous injuries, medicines and medical conditions before choosing pressure and position. Sports massage can be part of a wider rehabilitation plan; it does not replace diagnosis when pain has an unclear cause.
It may be considered for exercise-related muscle soreness or tightness, while a Muscle Strain or Muscle Contusion needs an appropriate assessment before hands-on work. Calf Pain deserves particular caution because not every cause is muscular.
How to get ready
Describe the exact location, onset and behaviour of your symptoms, including bruising, swelling, weakness or altered sensation. Tell the therapist whether you are preparing for activity, easing post-exercise tightness or returning after injury. Hydrate normally, wear practical clothing and agree on pressure you can tolerate; intense soreness is not a measure of a useful session.
Follow any mobility or recovery advice that fits your diagnosis. If your goal is to change restricted soft-tissue movement, ask whether Myofascial Release or a structured Sports Massage plan is suitable and how it fits with physiotherapy.
When massage should wait
Arrange medical assessment instead of massage for sudden severe pain, a visibly deformed limb, inability to bear weight, rapidly growing swelling, significant bruising after impact or new weakness. Seek urgent care for one-sided calf swelling with warmth, chest pain or breathlessness. Stop treatment if pain becomes sharp, numbness appears or symptoms continue to worsen.
Questions to ask
Ask whether massage is appropriate for your diagnosis, which areas should be avoided, and whether you need imaging or supervised rehabilitation first. Discuss timing around training and the signs that mean you should stop activity.

Questions people ask
Is sports massage suitable for a fresh injury?
Not automatically. Fresh swelling, bruising, severe pain or weakness should be assessed before hands-on treatment is considered.
How should massage feel?
Pressure can feel firm, but you should be able to communicate throughout and stop if pain is sharp, alarming or accompanied by numbness.
