What should you know about prodromal labor after membrane sweep?

A membrane sweep can irritate the cervix and may be followed by cramping, a small amount of blood-streaked mucus or contractions. Prodromal contractions often start and stop, vary in strength, and do not settle into a clear pattern. They can be tiring and may feel like early labour, but an examination is needed to know whether the cervix is changing. A sweep does not guarantee that active labour will follow.

Rest when you can, drink fluids, eat light foods if your maternity team allows it, and try a warm shower, gentle movement or a change of position. Time contractions for a while rather than reacting to every one. Note any fluid loss, bleeding, baby movements and how the pattern changes. Do not put anything into the vagina after a sweep unless your clinician has advised it.

Call your maternity unit for heavy bleeding, suspected waters breaking, reduced baby movements, fever, severe constant pain or contractions that become regular and increasingly strong. Seek urgent help for severe headache, vision changes, faintness or feeling seriously unwell. If you are unsure whether this is active labour, call the unit using the plan given for your pregnancy.

Ask what bleeding or mucus is expected after your sweep, which contraction pattern should prompt a call, how to monitor baby movements, and whether another assessment is needed. Clarify which pain medicines are suitable and where to go if labour progresses.
