What should you know about primer for plaster of paris?

Plaster of Paris is a mouldable casting material used to support and hold a body part while it heals or changes shape. The material is wrapped over protective padding, shaped while damp and allowed to harden into a supportive cast.

Plaster of Paris is made from a powder that reacts with water and sets. Its mouldability helps a clinician fit support around a limb or foot. Padding protects the skin, while the cast limits movement that could interfere with healing. A cast may be used for a fracture, after a procedure or during a staged correction such as clubfoot casting.

A plaster cast can soften or lose shape when wet. It may also feel tighter if swelling develops underneath. The fit should support the prescribed position without causing increasing pressure, numbness or colour change in the fingers or toes.

Keep the cast dry and never push objects inside it to scratch. Rest and elevate the supported limb as advised during early swelling. Move free fingers or toes gently unless your clinician has told you not to, and check the skin at the edges for rubbing. Do not trim, heat or alter the cast yourself.

Use the cast only for the time and activity advised. Fracture casting may require follow-up checks so the fit and healing can be reviewed. Contact the treating team if the cast cracks, becomes loose, develops a bad smell or no longer holds the prescribed position.

Seek urgent advice for worsening pain, severe tightness, new numbness, pins and needles, pale or blue fingers or toes, inability to move them, or swelling that does not improve with elevation. Emergency help is appropriate for severe pain with a cold limb or sudden breathing difficulty.

Ask how to keep the cast dry, which movements are allowed, how to use crutches or other aids, and when it will be checked or removed. Confirm which changes are expected after application and whom to contact if pressure, skin irritation or cast damage develops.
