Preventive measures for measles

Measles spreads easily through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or breathes nearby. MMR vaccination trains the immune system to recognise measles and also helps protect against mumps and rubella. Protection depends on having the doses recommended for your age and circumstances; a clinician can check your vaccination history if records are missing.

After a known exposure, avoid close contact with babies, pregnant people and anyone with reduced immunity until a healthcare professional advises you. Fever and swollen glands can occur with measles, but these symptoms have many possible causes.

If someone in your household develops a fever or rash after possible exposure, telephone a clinic before arriving so staff can reduce contact with others. Do not share towels, cups or utensils, and improve ventilation where possible.

Contact a clinician promptly after suspected exposure, especially for an infant, pregnancy or weakened immune system. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, unusual drowsiness, confusion, dehydration, or a seizure.
