Chikungunya prevention centres on avoiding mosquito bites, reducing standing water, and seeking advice early if compatible symptoms appear.

How transmission happens
Chikungunya is spread by infected mosquitoes, which can bite during the day as well as around dawn or dusk. A person who becomes infected can help the cycle continue if mosquitoes bite them while virus is present in the blood. Personal protection and mosquito control therefore work together.
Reduce mosquito exposure
Use an approved insect repellent as directed and reapply according to its label. Wear loose clothing that covers arms and legs, and use screens, air conditioning, or a bed net where appropriate. Empty, cover, or clean containers that collect water, including plant saucers, buckets, and outdoor toys. Keep windows and doors screened when possible. During travel, ask a clinician about destination-specific precautions before departure.
When to seek medical advice
Contact a healthcare professional if fever develops with marked joint pain or muscle aches after mosquito exposure or travel. A GP consultation can help assess other causes and guide testing or supportive care. Seek urgent help for confusion, difficulty breathing, severe weakness, dehydration, or a rapidly worsening illness. Avoid mosquito bites while unwell to reduce onward spread.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which repellent is suitable for you, how to combine it with sunscreen, and whether recent travel changes your risk. If symptoms occur, ask whether your medicines are appropriate and which warning signs require urgent review.
