Pressure bands for motion sickness: what to know

These elastic wristbands place a small button over an acupressure point on the inner wrist. Motion sickness happens when signals from the eyes and balance organs do not match, leading to nausea, sweating, dizziness or vomiting. A band is a non-drug option and generally does not cause medicine-related drowsiness, but pressure can feel uncomfortable and benefit varies.

Position the button where the manufacturer indicates and check that the band is comfortable, not tight or irritating. Look toward the horizon, choose a seat with less movement, keep fresh air flowing and take small sips of water. Avoid heavy meals and alcohol before travel. If you often become unwell, discuss preventive medicine with a pharmacist or travel clinician before departure.

Seek medical help if vomiting prevents you keeping fluids down, you become faint or confused, or dizziness continues after travel. Get urgent care for severe headache, chest pain, weakness, trouble speaking or new hearing or vision changes. These symptoms are not typical motion sickness and need assessment.
