What should you know about premarital health screening?

A screening visit may include a medical history, examination and laboratory tests chosen according to age, personal history, family history and local requirements. The clinician may review inherited conditions, infectious diseases, blood group information, vaccination needs and health issues that could affect pregnancy or a partner’s wellbeing. The exact panel is not identical for every person.

Screening is a chance to identify a concern early, clarify what a result means and discuss privacy. A result that needs follow-up is not a diagnosis by itself. Some findings call for repeat testing, confirmatory testing or a consultation with another clinician.

Book appointments early enough to allow time for results and any follow-up. Bring identification if required, a list of medicines and allergies, vaccination records and information about known family conditions. Tell the clinician about ongoing symptoms, previous tests and possible pregnancy. Ask whether fasting or another preparation is needed before blood tests, and share results with your partner only in a way that respects both people’s consent and privacy.

Arrange prompt clinical review if screening identifies an abnormal result, a possible infection, uncontrolled blood pressure or a condition that may affect pregnancy. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, chest pain, sudden weakness or other acute symptoms; a routine screening appointment is not designed for emergencies.

Ask which tests are recommended for each partner, how results will be shared, whether either result needs confirmation and what treatment or counselling may help. If you hope to have children, ask about medication safety, vaccination planning and whether a genetic consultation is appropriate.
