What does it look like when your water breaks?

Amniotic fluid is often watery rather than thick, and it may continue leaking after the first dampness. You may notice wet underwear, a warm gush when standing, or fluid that returns with movement. It can be difficult to distinguish from urine or normal vaginal discharge by appearance alone.

A green or brown colour can indicate that the baby has passed meconium and needs prompt assessment. A strong unpleasant smell, fever or feeling unwell can point to infection. Waters breaking before labour can happen at different stages of pregnancy; before full term it may be associated with Preterm Labour.

Note the time, colour, smell and amount of fluid. Use a clean maternity pad, not a tampon, and avoid putting anything in the vagina until you have spoken with your maternity service. Do not rely on a home guess if the dampness continues. Call the maternity unit or clinician who is caring for you for advice and assessment.

Seek urgent maternity care for green or brown fluid, fresh bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fever, reduced baby movements, or a strong urge to push. Go promptly if you are before full term and think your waters have broken, even without contractions. Call emergency services if you feel faint, have severe pain or cannot safely travel.

Ask how your team will confirm the source of the fluid, whether you should monitor contractions and movements, and which symptoms mean you should return immediately. Ask what hygiene and bathing advice applies while the membranes may be open.
