Pregnancy Swollen Hands in the Morning

Fluid shifts and pressure on tissues can make fingers feel puffy after lying still overnight. Rings may feel tighter, and mild swelling may vary during the day. Swelling with warmth, redness, injury, or reduced movement has other possible explanations; a Distal Radius Fracture follows an injury, while Rheumatoid Arthritis can involve inflammatory hand symptoms. Hand Swelling is the broader symptom label.

Remove tight rings early, keep the hands gently moving, and avoid prolonged positions that make swelling worse. Elevate the hands comfortably when resting and keep hydrated according to your maternity advice. Do not use compression or medication without checking suitability, particularly if one hand is painful, hot, or swollen after an injury.

Contact your maternity team promptly for sudden or rapidly increasing swelling, especially when it affects the face or comes with severe headache, vision changes, upper abdominal pain, unusual shortness of breath, or feeling very unwell. Seek urgent assessment for a hot red hand, severe pain, numbness, inability to move the fingers, or swelling after a fall.

Ask whether the timing and distribution of swelling are expected, how to monitor it at home, and whether your blood pressure or urine needs checking. Mention headaches, visual symptoms, pain, injury, and any history of inflammatory joint disease.
