When pregnancy spotting starts: what to know

Light spotting may appear around the time a period was expected, after sex, or after an examination because the cervix can be more sensitive in pregnancy. Bleeding later in pregnancy has different possible explanations and should be reported promptly. Other causes include infection, cervical dysplasia, polyps or conditions affecting the womb. A clinician uses the pregnancy stage together with the amount, colour, pain, examination and sometimes ultrasound; spotting itself does not tell you which condition is present.

Tell your maternity team when the spotting began, how long it lasted, whether it followed sex or an examination, and whether you have cramps, pain, discharge or dizziness. Immediate assessment is also appropriate if you feel seriously unwell, because the visible amount of bleeding may not show the full picture.

Ask what causes are being considered at your stage of pregnancy, whether you need an examination or scan, and whether any activity should be paused. Clarify how to monitor the bleeding, which symptoms mean you should attend emergency care, and when follow-up is due.
