Pregnancy nausea at night: what to know

Short answer
Pregnancy nausea can feel worse at night when an empty stomach, tiredness, reflux, or food smells add to the usual pregnancy changes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Timing
- Pregnancy nausea can occur during the evening as well as the morning.
- Helpful pattern
- Small snacks and regular sips may be easier to manage than large meals.
Why evening symptoms happen
Nausea in pregnancy is often linked to changing hormones and can occur at any time, despite the phrase morning sickness. Going many hours without food may make queasiness more noticeable. Lying down after eating can also bring on heartburn or acid reflux, which may feel like nausea. A warm room, strong cooking odours, or exhaustion can make the sensation harder to tolerate.
Nausea by itself does not identify one particular illness. Vomiting with diarrhoea, fever, marked upper abdominal pain, or yellowing of the skin may point to another problem such as Food Poisoning, Gastroenteritis, Gallstones, Gastritis, or Hepatitis A.
Ways to settle your stomach
Keep a plain snack beside the bed and try small bites before standing up or when nausea starts. During the day, choose small, frequent meals with carbohydrates and some protein, and sip fluids regularly. Cool foods may be easier than hot meals because they release fewer smells. Sit upright after eating, allow fresh air into the room, and rest when tired.
Do not start an anti-sickness medicine, herbal product, or supplement without checking with your maternity clinician. If symptoms repeatedly follow long gaps without food, ask whether Hypoglycaemia or another issue needs assessment.
When to seek medical care
Contact your maternity team promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, are passing very little urine, feel faint, or are losing weight. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit, confusion, or signs of significant dehydration. Persistent vomiting can require prescription treatment and fluids, so do not wait for a routine appointment if you are becoming weak.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which anti-sickness options are suitable at your stage of pregnancy, whether reflux could be contributing, and how to recognise dehydration. Tell the clinician when symptoms began, how often you vomit, what you can drink, and whether pain, fever, diarrhoea, or urinary changes are present.
