Pregnancy and strep throat: what to know

Short answer
During pregnancy, suspected strep throat should be assessed by a clinician so treatment can protect your health and support a safe pregnancy.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What strep throat means in pregnancy
Strep throat is a bacterial infection affecting the throat and tonsils. A sore throat, fever, painful swallowing, tender swollen glands, or white patches can occur, although symptoms overlap with viral infections. A sore throat does not by itself show that strep is present. A clinician may examine your throat and decide whether testing is appropriate. Pregnancy does not make every sore throat dangerous, but it does make medication choices worth checking carefully. Untreated infection can leave you feeling unwell and may cause complications, so do not rely on leftover antibiotics or someone else’s prescription.
What you can do now
Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms suggest strep throat, especially with fever, marked throat pain, or difficulty swallowing. Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Ask a clinician or pharmacist which pain-relief medicines are suitable for your stage of pregnancy; check every combination product before taking it. If testing confirms a bacterial infection, take the prescribed Antibiotic Treatment exactly as directed and finish the course unless your prescriber changes it. Avoid sharing utensils and wash your hands often while ill.
When to seek medical care
Seek same-day medical advice for a high or persistent fever, worsening throat pain, dehydration, or symptoms that are not settling. Get urgent help if you cannot swallow fluids, have trouble breathing, develop swelling in the neck, feel faint, or become unusually drowsy. Contact your maternity team promptly if you are worried about reduced fetal movement or feel significantly unwell. A clinician can distinguish strep throat from Tonsillitis and other causes, then advise on pregnancy-compatible treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be strep throat or another infection? Do I need a throat test? Which medicines are suitable for my pregnancy? What should I do if I vomit after a dose or develop a rash?
