Pregnancy and scarlet fever: what to know

Scarlet fever is linked to infection with group A Streptococcus, the same type of bacteria associated with [Strep Throat](/conditions/strep-throat/). Symptoms can include a sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands, a rough-feeling rash, flushed cheeks, and a paler area around the mouth. Not every case has every feature.

Pregnancy does not make every throat infection scarlet fever, and a rash has several possible causes. A clinician may examine your throat and skin and decide whether testing or treatment is needed. Prompt care helps manage illness and reduces spread to close contacts.

Contact your maternity or primary-care service promptly if you develop a fever, sore throat, or a new rough rash after exposure. Rest, drink fluids, and use only pregnancy-suitable symptom relief recommended by your clinician. Avoid sharing cups, towels, or cutlery and wash hands regularly.
