Pregnancy after silent miscarriage: what to know

A silent miscarriage, also called a missed miscarriage, can be found on a scan when pregnancy development has stopped without immediate bleeding or cramping. The absence of symptoms does not show how a later pregnancy will develop.

Recovery includes both physical healing and emotional adjustment. Your clinician may confirm that the miscarriage has completed and discuss whether tissue was managed with observation, medicine or a procedure.

Ask when it is medically suitable to try again, start folic acid as advised, and review medicines or conditions that could affect pregnancy. After a positive test, contact maternity care early and explain the previous missed miscarriage.

If the earlier loss still needs treatment, your clinician may discuss Medical Management of Miscarriage or Surgical Management of Miscarriage. Do not take leftover medicine without medical instructions.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting, fever, foul-smelling discharge or marked weakness. In a new pregnancy, contact your care team for bleeding or pain so you can receive appropriate assessment rather than trying to judge the cause at home.

Ask whether the miscarriage is fully resolved, when to try again, whether an early scan is suitable, and which physical or emotional symptoms should lead you to seek support.
