Delivery removes the pregnancy, but blood pressure and related problems may not settle immediately. Some mothers need observation, blood tests, medication, or a review of kidney and liver function after birth. Fatigue can be expected after delivery, yet a severe headache, visual change, upper-abdominal pain, or breathlessness should not be dismissed as normal recovery. Emotional support is also part of postpartum care.

Take prescribed blood-pressure medicine and attend every postnatal review. If home checks are recommended, use the method your team demonstrates and record readings with symptoms. Ask before changing medication, especially when breastfeeding. Arrange practical help so you can rest, hydrate, eat regularly, and attend care while recovering and caring for your baby.

Get urgent medical help for a severe or persistent headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, severe pain under the ribs, difficulty breathing, confusion, fainting, or a seizure. Heavy bleeding, chest pain, or sudden one-sided weakness also needs emergency assessment. These symptoms matter even if your blood pressure was normal before leaving hospital.

Ask when your next blood pressure review is due, how long medication may be needed, which readings require urgent contact, and who will coordinate follow-up. Discuss future pregnancy planning and whether your medical history changes the monitoring you will need.
