What should you know about preeclampsia after pregnancy symptoms?

A headache that does not settle with usual measures, flashing lights or blurred vision, pain under the ribs, sudden swelling of the face or hands, nausea, vomiting, or unusual weakness can occur when blood pressure is affecting the body. Breathlessness or chest discomfort may signal a serious complication. Some people have few symptoms, which is why blood-pressure checks and planned postnatal review remain useful. These symptoms can have other causes, but a clinician must assess them rather than relying on how likely one diagnosis seems.

Stop what you are doing and contact your maternity team, doctor, or urgent medical service. Mention that you have recently been pregnant or given birth, describe when the symptom began, and share any blood-pressure reading. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, confused, short of breath, or have vision problems. Keep prescribed medicines available and do not change the dose without medical advice. Call emergency services for a seizure, severe headache with vision changes, chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, or intense pain under the ribs.
