Prediabetes Blood Sugar: What It Means

Blood glucose changes with fasting, food, activity, illness, stress and medicines. A fasting result, an average-glucose test and a glucose tolerance test answer different questions, so their interpretation is not interchangeable. A home meter can help show patterns but is not designed to diagnose prediabetes on its own.

Prediabetes may reflect insulin resistance, in which cells respond less effectively to insulin. It can occur without symptoms. Excessive thirst and frequent urination deserve medical review, but neither symptom identifies the cause by itself.

Ask a clinician to review the exact test, whether you were fasting, and whether another test is needed. Keep taking prescribed medicines unless told otherwise.
