Pre-labour rupture of membranes

The membranes around the baby can release fluid as a gush or as a continuing trickle. It may be difficult to distinguish amniotic fluid from urine or normal discharge at home. The fluid is often clear or pale, but colour and smell can vary.

When the waters break before labour, clinicians check whether the membranes have ruptured, how far along the pregnancy is, the baby's heart rate and whether there are signs of infection or labour. The timing matters because the plan differs when this happens early.

Put on a clean maternity pad, note when the fluid started, and record its colour, smell and amount. Contact your maternity unit promptly and follow its instructions about attending. Avoid tampons, intercourse and putting anything in the vagina until assessed. Do not drive yourself if you feel unwell or contractions are strong.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for green or brown fluid, fresh bleeding, fever, feeling unwell, severe abdominal pain, regular contractions or reduced fetal movement. If the waters break before term, treat it as urgent even without pain, because early membrane rupture can be associated with preterm labour.

Ask how the fluid will be confirmed, what monitoring you need, which infection symptoms to watch for, and how the pregnancy stage affects the plan. Ask when to return or call again if leaking continues.
