Pre-eclampsia treatment after delivery

Giving birth removes the pregnancy, but blood pressure and organ changes may not settle immediately. Pre-eclampsia can first become noticeable after delivery, including after leaving hospital. Clinicians may check blood pressure, urine and blood tests, ask about headache or vision, and assess breathing and swelling. Treatment choices depend on the readings, symptoms, kidney and liver function, platelet results, and whether you are breastfeeding. Your baby's birth does not make a new severe symptom safe to ignore.

Take blood-pressure medicine exactly as prescribed and attend the review arranged by your maternity team. Do not stop a medicine because a reading improves unless the prescriber changes it. Ask which pain medicines are suitable, how to check blood pressure at home if advised, and whether treatment is compatible with breastfeeding. Some people need hospital observation or magnesium medicine to reduce seizure risk. Keep a written list of readings, symptoms and medicines so changes are easier to discuss.

Seek emergency or urgent maternity care for a severe headache that does not settle, visual changes, severe pain under the ribs, chest pain, breathlessness, confusion, a seizure, fainting or rapidly worsening swelling. Call promptly for a high reading if your team has given you a threshold. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, confused or severely unwell.

Ask how long monitoring is expected, what reading requires urgent contact, when medicines may be adjusted, and which symptoms can signal organ complications. Confirm who to contact overnight and how follow-up will cover future pregnancy planning and long-term blood-pressure care.
