Short answer

Postpartum depression can occur during pregnancy or at any point after birth, including later in the postnatal period, so new symptoms deserve attention.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible onset

Assessment
Timing does not replace an evaluation of symptoms, function and safety.

When it can begin

The phrase postpartum depression is commonly used for depression linked with pregnancy and the months after birth. It may appear soon after delivery or later, when feeding, sleep disruption, isolation, physical recovery or changing responsibilities become difficult. A person may feel sad, anxious, irritable, empty, guilty or unable to enjoy activities, and may struggle to connect with the baby.

Timing alone does not diagnose the condition. A clinician will consider the pattern, severity, functioning, medical history and safety. Low mood after birth is worth discussing even if the birth was months ago or symptoms began after an initially manageable period.

What you can do

Write down the changes you have noticed and tell a trusted person. Contact a doctor, midwife or mental health professional for an assessment. Perinatal mental health support may combine therapy, medication and practical help. Ask family to share night-time tasks, meals, transport or baby care while you attend appointments and recover.

Warning signs

Get urgent help for suicidal thoughts, thoughts of harming the baby, hallucinations, severe confusion, extreme agitation or any situation where safe care is not possible. Contact local emergency services if danger is immediate, and do not stay alone while waiting for help.

Questions for an appointment

Ask whether the timing and symptoms suggest postpartum depression, what other causes should be checked, which treatments fit your circumstances, and how quickly follow-up should occur. Ask for a clear crisis plan.

Questions people ask

Can depression start after I felt well initially?

Yes. New symptoms later after birth should be assessed rather than dismissed because the early weeks felt manageable.

Is anxiety part of postpartum depression?

Anxiety can occur alongside depression, but a clinician can assess whether another condition also needs attention.
