An image from a home device may be difficult to interpret because the canal is narrow and curved. A normal-looking view also cannot rule out every cause of ear pain or reduced hearing.

Do not push the tip into the ear, use it to remove wax, or examine a painful ear without professional guidance. Children may move suddenly, so an adult should avoid inserting a device unless trained and advised. A GP or ear clinician can examine both ears, ask about hearing and balance, and choose treatment based on the findings. Avoid cotton buds and keep water out of an ear that is draining until assessed.

Get urgent care for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, swelling behind the ear, a serious injury, a lodged object, or blood or pus coming from the ear. Seek prompt advice for fever, worsening symptoms, dizziness, or a child who seems unusually unwell.

Ask whether the ear canal and eardrum were fully visible, whether wax or infection is present, and whether hearing should be tested. For a child, ask when review is needed and which symptoms should prompt same-day advice.
