Port Wine Stain Treatment: What to Know

Port wine stains are capillary malformations, meaning widened small vessels sit near the skin surface. Treatment is usually elective and may be considered because of appearance, repeated irritation, bleeding from a raised area, or difficulty managing the affected skin. The plan depends on the patch's colour, thickness, depth, body site, skin tone, age, and medical history. A consultation also identifies medicines, recent tanning, active skin inflammation, and a history of unusual scarring that may affect timing or technique.

Ask the treating clinician how to prepare, including which products or medicines to pause and how to protect the area from sun. Pulsed dye laser treatment uses targeted light to heat blood vessels; the skin may be temporarily red, swollen, darker, or bruised afterwards.
