What should you know about port wine stain removal?

A port-wine stain, also called a capillary malformation, is a collection of widened small blood vessels in the skin. It may be present from birth and can become darker or thicker over time. Treatment is generally planned to lighten the mark rather than remove skin or change its texture.

A dermatologist examines the colour, thickness, surface, and position of the stain. They may ask when it appeared and whether it has changed. The assessment helps distinguish a stable vascular birthmark from another skin problem and identifies areas that need closer evaluation.

Pulsed dye laser treatment is a commonly considered option because it targets blood vessels beneath the skin. Light energy is absorbed by blood within the vessels, creating heat that encourages the treated vessels to fade over time. A cooling device may be used during treatment to protect the skin’s surface.

Several appointments are often needed because the skin must recover between treatments and different parts of a stain may respond at different speeds. Complete clearing is not assured, and some colour may remain or return.

Before treatment, tell the clinician about medicines, supplements, previous scarring, cold sores, tanning, and any skin products that irritate you. Follow the clinic’s instructions about sun exposure and skincare, and attend with clean skin unless you are given different guidance.

After a laser session, temporary redness, swelling, warmth, bruising, or small crusts can occur. Keep the area clean, avoid picking or rubbing it, and use only the products recommended for healing. Protect treated skin from sunlight because irritation and pigment changes may be more noticeable after exposure.

Ask when makeup, exercise, swimming, shaving, and active skincare can be restarted. Keep follow-up appointments so the clinician can check healing and decide whether the treatment plan should be adjusted.

Arrange a dermatology review if a port-wine stain develops a new lump, open sore, persistent bleeding, marked pain, or a sudden change in colour or thickness. These changes do not establish a serious diagnosis, but they should be examined rather than treated as a cosmetic concern alone.

Contact the treating clinic promptly after laser treatment if redness or swelling is worsening instead of settling, blisters or extensive wounds develop, or you notice spreading warmth, pus, fever, or severe pain. Seek urgent care for swelling around the eye that affects vision or for any breathing difficulty.
