What should you know about pop cast for fracture?

The cast limits movement around the fracture so the bone can remain in a useful position. A fresh plaster cast may feel heavy and warm as it dries; keep it uncovered during this period and handle it with open hands rather than fingertips. Fibreglass is lighter and dries quickly, but the padding underneath still protects the skin and should not be pulled out.

A cast may be applied after a fracture is examined, and sometimes after a closed reduction has realigned the bone. An ankle fracture and a distal radius fracture are examples of injuries that may need immobilisation, although the exact support depends on the fracture and follow-up images.

Keep the cast dry unless your clinical team has supplied a safe bathing method. Do not insert objects to scratch, trim the edges, or use powders inside it. Elevate the limb when swelling is present, move the free fingers or toes regularly, and use only the prescribed pain plan. Keep scheduled reviews because the cast may need adjustment as swelling changes or healing progresses.

Do not put weight through a leg cast until you have been told that it is allowed. Once the bone is ready, rehabilitation may address stiffness, strength, balance, and a gradual return to activity.

Contact the fracture service promptly for worsening or severe pain, increasing tightness, numbness, tingling, unusual coldness, or fingers or toes that become pale or blue. Seek urgent help if you cannot move the digits, the cast breaks, drainage or a strong odour develops, or swelling does not improve with elevation. Sudden chest pain or breathlessness requires emergency care.

Ask how long the cast is expected to stay on, whether you may walk or use the hand, how to bathe safely, which exercises are appropriate, and which changes should trigger an urgent review.
