What should you know about Pontiac fever?

Pontiac fever is associated with inhaling fine droplets from contaminated water systems, such as showers, spas, or cooling equipment. Fever is a common presentation, often accompanied by headache, muscle aches, chills, fatigue, and sometimes nausea. Unlike Legionnaires' disease, Pontiac fever is generally not a pneumonia illness, but similar early symptoms can make the distinction difficult without clinical assessment. A recent stay in a building with a water-system problem can be useful information for the clinician.

Rest, drink fluids if you can, and monitor how your symptoms change. Contact a clinician if fever or flu-like symptoms follow a suspected water exposure, especially if you are older, pregnant, immunocompromised, or have a long-term lung or heart condition. Do not share prescription medicines or assume antibiotics are suitable without advice. Mention the exposure, symptom start, travel, and any breathing symptoms.

Get urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, blue or grey lips, or inability to keep fluids down.
