How ultrasound measures polyhydramnios

During the scan, the sonographer views the uterus and identifies fluid-filled areas that do not contain the baby or umbilical cord. The fluid may be summarised using an amniotic fluid index or by measuring the deepest vertical pocket, depending on the pregnancy and local practice. The result is interpreted alongside gestational age, fetal growth, movements, anatomy and maternal symptoms. A single measurement is a snapshot; fluid can change, which is why a repeat scan may be suggested.

Ask which measurement was used and whether the result is mild or more marked in the context of your pregnancy. Keep planned follow-up visits so your team can compare fluid over time and check the baby’s growth and wellbeing. Mention diabetes history, medicines, leaking fluid or new symptoms. A growth scan may be part of the wider assessment, rather than a test that explains every cause of extra fluid.

An ultrasound appointment should not delay urgent care. Contact your maternity unit for reduced fetal movement, leaking waters, bleeding, regular contractions or severe abdominal pain. Get urgent help if you are struggling to breathe at rest, feel faint or develop sudden severe swelling. These warning signs require clinical assessment regardless of the recorded fluid measurement.

Ask whether the scan used a fluid index or deepest pocket, how the result compares with your stage of pregnancy, and whether the baby’s growth and anatomy look reassuring. Clarify when the next scan is planned and which symptoms should lead you to call sooner.
