What should you know about pollen rash?

Pollen may settle on exposed skin during outdoor activities, especially around plants, grass, or trees. Some people develop itchy red patches or raised welts after contact; others mainly notice eye or nose symptoms from airborne pollen. Heat, sweat, fragrances, and skincare products can also irritate skin at the same time. A rash after outdoor exposure can therefore have several explanations, including contact dermatitis or an existing condition that has flared. The pattern and timing matter more than the label.

Rinse exposed skin after outdoor activity and change clothing if pollen may have collected on it. Keep windows closed when outdoor pollen is visibly troublesome, and avoid rubbing itchy areas. Cool compresses and a bland moisturiser may soothe discomfort. Ask a pharmacist about an appropriate anti-itch option, particularly for children, pregnancy, or sensitive skin. If the rash keeps returning, record where you were and what touched your skin before symptoms began.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or widespread hives with other body symptoms. Seek medical advice for a rash affecting the eyes, severe swelling, blistering, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening pain. A clinician should review persistent or recurrent eruptions, because pollen may be coincidental and another trigger may need treatment.
