What should you know about polio disease transmission?

How the structures involved in Poliomyelitis differ from normal

Short answer

Polio spreads mainly through contact with infected stool, and vaccination is the strongest way to prevent infection and community spread.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How transmission happens

Poliovirus can leave an infected person's body in stool and enter another person's mouth through contaminated hands, water, food, or surfaces. It can spread before obvious illness appears because some infections cause few or no symptoms. Crowded living conditions and limited access to clean water and sanitation can make spread easier. The virus first multiplies in the intestine and may then affect the nervous system, where it can cause weakness or paralysis.

Reducing the chance of spread

Check that children and adults who need catch-up protection have received the polio vaccines recommended by their clinician. Wash hands carefully with soap and water after using the toilet or changing nappies and before preparing food. Use safe drinking water, clean food-preparation areas, and sanitary toilets. If a household member has suspected polio, follow local public-health instructions and avoid sharing unwashed utensils or towels until advice is given.

When prompt medical help is needed

Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden weakness in an arm or leg, difficulty walking, trouble swallowing, breathing difficulty, or marked neck or back stiffness. A child with fever and new weakness needs prompt evaluation even if the weakness seems mild. Contact a healthcare professional quickly after possible exposure if vaccination is incomplete, because public-health teams may need to assess contacts and arrange testing or preventive steps.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which polio vaccine doses are recorded, whether anyone in the household needs catch-up vaccination, and what local advice applies after a suspected exposure. You can also ask how to recognise early weakness and which symptoms should lead to emergency care.

Questions people ask

Can someone spread polio without feeling ill?

Yes. Some infected people have no clear symptoms but can still shed poliovirus and pass it to others.

Does handwashing replace vaccination?

No. Handwashing and sanitation reduce exposure, while vaccination provides the central protection against polio.
