What should you know about polio disease symptoms?

Many poliovirus infections cause no noticeable symptoms. When illness is apparent, it may resemble a mild viral infection with fever, sore throat, tiredness, headache, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort. A smaller group develop signs that the nervous system is affected, such as intense muscle pain, stiffness of the neck or back, or weakness in an arm or leg.

Weakness may worsen quickly and can affect breathing or swallowing muscles. These symptoms are not specific to polio, so they need clinical assessment rather than a conclusion based on symptoms alone.

Arrange prompt medical advice for a feverish illness with unusual muscle pain, stiffness, or reduced movement, especially after travel or known exposure. Share the vaccination record and describe when each symptom began. Until advice is given, wash hands carefully, avoid sharing personal items, and follow any instructions from public-health staff.

Call emergency services for sudden or worsening weakness, inability to walk, difficulty swallowing, choking, or any breathing difficulty. Emergency assessment is also needed if a person is unusually drowsy, cannot keep fluids down, or develops severe neck or back stiffness with fever. Mention possible poliovirus exposure immediately so the right precautions can be arranged.

Ask whether symptoms could indicate nervous-system involvement, whether testing or public-health notification is needed, and how to protect household members. Confirm whether vaccinations are up to date and which follow-up symptoms should trigger an emergency call.
