Short answer

Polio comes from infection with poliovirus, which spreads mainly through contact with contaminated stool.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Where poliovirus comes from

Poliovirus lives in the digestive tract of an infected person and leaves the body in stool. It can reach another person when contaminated hands, food, water, or surfaces enter the mouth. Spread is easier where handwashing, sanitation, and safe water are limited. A person may pass on the virus without knowing they are infected.

The virus is not created by cold weather, stress, or a vaccine. Different poliovirus types exist, and vaccination is designed to train the immune system against the types included in the recommended programme.

Reducing spread

Wash hands carefully with soap and water after using the toilet or changing nappies and before preparing food or eating. Use safe drinking water and clean food-preparation surfaces. Check that children and adults have received the polio doses advised for them, especially before travel or when local health authorities identify a risk. If infection is suspected, follow public-health instructions and avoid sharing personal items.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical care for sudden weakness in an arm or leg, difficulty walking, trouble swallowing, or breathing difficulty, particularly after a fever or gastrointestinal illness. Contact a clinician promptly about fever with marked muscle pain or stiffness, or after possible exposure in an area where polio is circulating. These symptoms have many causes, so assessment is needed rather than self-diagnosis.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your household vaccinations are up to date, whether travel changes the advice, and what symptoms should be reported. If exposure is a concern, ask about testing, isolation guidance, and notification of local health services.

Questions people ask

Can polio spread from someone without symptoms?

Yes. Some infected people have no obvious symptoms but can still shed poliovirus and pass it to others.

Does good hygiene replace vaccination?

No. Hygiene reduces exposure, while vaccination gives specific immune protection against poliovirus.
