Is poison ivy rash spreading?

Areas exposed to more plant oil may react more strongly or later than lightly exposed areas. Oil can remain on fingers, clothing, shoes, gardening tools, and pet fur, creating fresh contact. A rash that keeps appearing without a clear exposure may instead need assessment for [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/) or another condition such as [Drug Rash](/conditions/drug-eruption/), [Scabies](/conditions/scabies/), or [Ringworm](/conditions/ringworm/).

Wash exposed skin promptly with water and mild cleanser, including beneath the nails. Wash clothing and clean equipment before using them again; handle contaminated laundry carefully. Bathe pets that may have brushed against the plant. Use cool compresses, wear loose clothing, and avoid picking or opening blisters. Get urgent help if swelling affects the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or if breathing becomes difficult. Arrange prompt care when new rash reaches the eyes or mouth, pain and warmth increase, pus appears, fever develops, or symptoms are severe enough to disrupt sleep or daily activity. A clinician can check whether ongoing exposure, infection, or another diagnosis explains the change.
