What should you know about point-of-care cholesterol testing?

A clinician usually takes a small blood sample from a fingertip and places it in a testing device. The result may give information about total cholesterol and, depending on the device, other parts of a lipid profile. The test is quick, but the result still needs to be interpreted alongside your health history.

Cholesterol is carried in the blood in different particles, including LDL and HDL. Your clinician considers the pattern of results, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, family history, and previous cardiovascular problems when discussing risk. A point-of-care result can be useful for discussion, but it may not replace laboratory testing when a detailed or confirmatory assessment is needed.

Ask whether you need to fast, because preparation depends on the test and the clinical question. Share medicines, supplements, pregnancy status, and relevant family history. If the result needs confirmation, arrange the recommended laboratory cholesterol test and keep the follow-up appointment. Food choices, physical activity, smoking cessation, and treatment decisions should be personalised rather than based on one reading alone.

A cholesterol reading itself is not usually an emergency. Seek urgent help for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, sudden weakness on one side, new difficulty speaking, or sudden loss of balance. These symptoms need immediate assessment regardless of your cholesterol result.
