What should you know about a pocket LED otoscope?

The light helps you see the outer canal and, when the view is clear, the eardrum. Earwax, narrow canals, movement, or an awkward angle can hide important areas. Redness or fluid on a screen does not by itself identify the cause, and a normal-looking image does not rule out pain coming from nearby structures.

Never push the tip into the ear or use it to remove wax. Children may move suddenly, so home inspection can scratch the canal or injure the eardrum.

Use only a device designed for the ear, follow its cleaning and lighting instructions, and stop if there is pain, dizziness, bleeding, or resistance. Do not share an uncleaned tip. Record what you noticed and when symptoms began rather than repeatedly probing the ear.

A clinician can examine both ears, compare findings, and decide whether wax treatment, testing, or another explanation fits. For a child, a Child Health Consultation may be appropriate; adults can arrange a GP Consultation.

Seek prompt medical assessment for severe or worsening ear pain, sudden hearing loss, discharge or blood, marked swelling, severe dizziness, facial weakness, or fever with a child who looks very unwell. Do not delay care while trying to obtain a clearer image.

Ask whether wax, infection, eardrum inflammation, or another source best explains the symptoms; whether the ear canal is safe to clean; and what changes should trigger follow-up.
