What should you know about pneumatic otoscope head?

A pneumatic otoscope is an ear examination device with a sealed tip and a small control that changes the air pressure in the ear canal. The clinician watches the eardrum through the viewing lens while applying a gentle pressure change. A normally flexible eardrum moves; reduced movement can occur when fluid or pressure is present behind it, such as with middle-ear congestion. The finding is interpreted alongside pain, hearing changes, fever, the appearance of the eardrum and your medical history.

Remain still and tell the clinician if the ear feels sore, blocked or unusually sensitive. Do not put cotton buds, drops or other objects into the ear beforehand unless a clinician advised them. Arrange medical assessment for new hearing loss, persistent ear pain, fluid or blood from the ear, repeated ear infections, or symptoms that are worsening. Seek urgent help for severe dizziness, sudden hearing loss, swelling behind the ear, marked drowsiness or difficulty breathing. These warning signs need clinical assessment regardless of what an otoscope examination might show.

Ask what the eardrum looked like, whether it moved normally, whether fluid or infection is suspected, and whether hearing should be checked. If symptoms continue, ask when a repeat examination is needed and which changes should prompt earlier care.
