What should you know about plastic surgery for hooded eyelids?

Hooding can come from extra upper-eyelid skin, changes in fat, brow position, or the eyelid-lifting muscle. Dermatochalasis is the clinical term often used for excess eyelid skin. An examination checks symmetry, brow movement, eyelid position, eye surface, and whether skin rests on the lashes or narrows the upper field of vision.

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, may remove or reposition selected tissue. Non-surgical options such as plasma pen or radiofrequency skin tightening may be discussed for limited laxity, but they do not provide the same tissue removal and may not address a functional obstruction.

Bring details of headaches, tired eyes, visual obstruction, dry eyes, contact-lens use, allergies, medicines, and previous eye procedures. Ask whether the brow or eyelid muscle contributes to the hooded appearance. Plan for swelling and bruising, arrange transport if advised, and follow instructions about eye drops, cleaning, makeup, and activity during recovery.

Contact the surgical team for worsening redness, discharge, fever, increasing pain, wound separation, or swelling that is not following the expected course. Seek urgent care for severe eye pain, sudden vision loss or double vision, marked one-sided swelling, or trouble breathing. A gradual difference between the eyelids should be assessed at follow-up.

Ask what tissue causes the hooding, whether vision testing is appropriate, which procedure is proposed, and how the plan protects eyelid closure and the eye surface. Discuss scar position, recovery milestones, dryness, asymmetry, and when normal activities can resume.
