What should you know about plaster of paris waterproof?

Plaster of Paris sets into a rigid shell, but it can absorb water. Moisture may soften the cast, weaken its shape, irritate the skin underneath, and make padding stay damp. A cast that loses its fit may no longer hold the injured area in the intended position. Waterproof does not describe every cast: some synthetic materials tolerate limited moisture, but the padding, edges, wound dressings, and clinician’s instructions still determine whether water is allowed.

Keep the cast outside the bath or shower whenever possible. Use a purpose-made waterproof cover and seal it above the cast; do not rely on a loose plastic bag. Do not swim unless the treating team has specifically approved it. If splashes occur, gently towel the outside and let air circulate. Never use direct heat to dry a cast, and do not insert tissue, wires, or other objects inside it to scratch the skin.

Contact the treating service if the cast is soaked, remains damp, becomes soft, cracks, smells unpleasant, or rubs the skin. Get urgent help for increasing pain or tightness, new numbness or tingling, unusual colour or coldness in fingers or toes, or swelling that does not settle with the advised elevation. Do not cut or remove the cast yourself.

Ask whether your cast and its padding can tolerate any moisture, how to cover it, and what to do after accidental soaking. Clarify whether a replacement is needed, how often the cast will be checked, and which circulation or skin changes should trigger urgent advice.
